Barnabás Varga’s stunning two-goal performance fired Greek champions AEK Athens into the UEFA Champions League league phase—and helped set a new record for Hungarian players in Europe’s elite competition. A total of seven Hungarians will thus represent five clubs in the 36-team league phase this season, the largest contingent in Champions League history. Adding to the excitement, Péter Gulácsi’s Villarreal will face defending champion Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, which boasts two Hungarian players in its squad.
On Wednesday night, 31-year-old Hungarian national team striker Barnabás Varga was the hero of the second leg of AEK Athens’ playoff against Levski Sofia. After a scoreless 0-0 draw in the first leg in Bulgaria, AEK wasted little time in front of its home crowd. Varga scored twice within the opening 30 minutes, putting the Greek side firmly on course for victory. AEK ultimately cruised to a convincing 4-0 win.
For AEK, the result marks a return to European soccer’s elite after an eight-year absence, while Varga will make his personal Champions League debut. At the same time, his two-goal performance sealed a new Hungarian record.

The previous record was four Hungarian players, set during the 2011/12 and 2024/25 seasons, Magyar Nemzet writes. While there have technically been more Hungarians on the Champions League stage—Hungarian clubs Ferencváros Budapest (1995/96) and Debrecen VSC (2009/10) each fielded 15 domestic players in their respective group-stage campaigns—never before have so many Hungarian players simultaneously represented foreign clubs in Europe’s top competition. In the previous record-setting 2011/12 season, the four Hungarians were spread across KRC Genk (Dániel Tőzsér and László Köteles), Olympiacos (Balázs Megyeri), and Zenit St. Petersburg (Szabolcs Huszti).
Seven Hungarian players at five clubs across five of Europe’s top leagues make up this year’s record contingent.
The outlook for the 2026/27 season is promising, as most of the Hungarian athletes are expected to play important roles for their respective teams.

- Liverpool FC: Dominik Szoboszlai has established himself as a leader in the Reds’ midfield. Alongside him is Milos Kerkez, who already has considerable experience at the highest level after helping Liverpool reach the quarterfinals last season.
- RB Leipzig: Defensive leader Willi Orbán returns to the European stage with Leipzig after a one-year absence.
- Villarreal CF: 36-year-old goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi joined the Spanish top-flight club in early August after 11 years at RB Leipzig. He signed a two-year contract and, according to Spanish reports, is expected to be the club’s primary goalkeeper in Champions League matches.
- Galatasaray and AEK Athens: Roland Sallai has joined the Turkish powerhouse, while AEK Athens will have both star striker Barnabás Varga and Milán Vitális available for the league phase.

Soccer fans can look forward to an unprecedented Hungarian presence on the continent’s biggest stage this fall. The Champions League draw will also see Hungarians go head-to-head, with Péter Gulácsi’s Villarreal set to face Liverpool and its two Hungarian stars, Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez, in the league phase.
