Davis Martin is still looking for his 10th win, but he pitched well enough on a wet field at the Rate on Sunday to set the stage for a more critical White Sox victory.

Martin tossed scoreless ball for 4 1/3 innings, then the bullpen took over as the White Sox cruised past the Detroit Tigers 8-1 and remained one game behind first-place Cleveland in the American League Central. The South Siders hold the final AL wild card spot, three games ahead of Toronto and Houston.

Chase Meidroth smacked his 15th homer, a two run-shot in the fifth to open a 6-0 lead, after Sam Antonacci laced a two-run double in the South Siders’ three-run fourth. Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Munetaka Murakami and Randal Grichuk also came through with RBIs as the Sox took three of four from the Tigers and improved to 80-76.

The Sox put it away with two runs in the eighth, completing a 10-hit attack.

The game was scheduled to start at 1:10 p.m.,but the first pitch was delayed by persistent light rain to 5 p.m. The Sox already knew the Guardians had edged the Athletics 1-0 for a fifth straight win by then.

Martin entered Sunday off three effective outings since returning from the injured list from a right middle finger blister on Sept 2. He came through with a fourth against Detroit.

The right-hander allowed three hits, walking two, hitting a batter and striking out six before exiting with right calf tightness after 70 pitches (43 for strikes).

“I’ve been dealing with it since probably April, so it’s been like and on-and-off thing,” Martin said of the calf condition, which was exacerbating instability on the mound. “I was kind of sliding all over the place.

“Nothing that’s going to hold me long-term,” he added. “Just a little extra tonight, and so just thought it was wise with where the game was going…”

Martin meant to exit the game, and before getting through five innings for his first win since June 10.

Hagen Smith, Huascar Brazobán, Trevor Richards and Luis Castillo followed. Only Richards, who tossed the seventh and eight innings, was touched for a run. Brazobán (6-2) tossed a scoreless sixth inning for the win and Castillo pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

The unusual string of relievers worked. And manager Will Venable said his team was “light in the pen today and really needed all those runs.”

“Guys stepped up and did their job,” he said.

Martin hasn’t regained his dominance of earlier this season, when he raced a 9-2 record. He earned that ninth win by tossing six shutout innings against Atlanta 99 days ago.

The righty is still 9-7 overall, but since returning from his blister, Martin has given the White Sox rotation some desperately needed stability this month.

Although the right-hander is 0-1 with three no-decisions, Martin has yielded just three runs (two earned) in 20 1/3 innings in three starts and a bulk relief appearance. That works out to a 0.89 ERA. He’s allowed 16 hits, walked six and struck out 10.

“I’m just kind of getting back to what I was doing earlier in the year,” Martin said. “Getting back to, you know, trusting God’s plan and no fear of failure.

“And when a guy gets a hit, when a guy hits a home run, when you walk a guy, it’s not a hyper-fixation. It’s compartmentalized and go to the next one and then attack that guy.

“And then mechanically, obviously fixing mechanics helps a ton,” he added.

The White Sox took a 1-0 lead in the second Sunday when Meidroth stole second and scored on Montgomery’s double. The Sox extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth, scoring on Antonacci’s double and Teel’s single with two outs.

Meidroth homered to the left-field bullpen off Ty Madden gave the Sox some breathing room.

Outfielder Tristan Peters remained out of the lineup on Sunday after hitting the right-center wall hard and smashing his shoulder on Friday as he tried to snare Kevin McGonigle’s bases-clearing triple. Brenton Doyle played in center field and Montgomery in right.

But Peters pinch-ran for Tommy Pham in the eighth Sunday and scored. Afterward, Peters said he took some batting swings during the rain delay and might be back in the lineup Tuesday in Kansas City.

“I was encouraged by my swings today,” Peters said. “I felt way better than I was expecting to.”
