White Sox manager Will Venable doesn’t always say the right thing.

“Speaking is not really my thing as far as literally getting words out and effectively communicating,” Venable told the Sun-Times. “I say ‘um’ all the time. Sometimes I say words and I'm like, ‘Damn, that didn't come out right.’”

The second-year skipper has a book of tongue twisters he’ll return to for practice. As he entered into coaching, he recalls reaching out to his friend, A’s broadcaster Jenny Cavnar for help on his public speaking, and credits her for giving him opportunities to practice in radio interviews.

Even stories from teammates about times he showed leadership during his playing days described Venable as more of an effective communicator, aided by the gravitas that his work ethic lent him, rather than an eager one. Working a job defined by communication across the endless different branches of an MLB organization required an evolution, but still reflects someone who doesn’t talk for the sake of talking.

“We're kids when we play this game, and he's a fully grown, mature adult doing this now,” said Sox field coordinator Chris Denorfia, who played with Venable on the Padres. “[His communication style] is the same, but it's more finely-tuned. He extends that into the coaching room. He wants all of our messages to be short, to the point, no fluff.”

A byproduct that’s more intentional with time is the lack of obfuscation. Venable doesn’t mince words in a postgame interview when one of his many non-traditional, metric-guided moves doesn’t pan out. He wants all his communication that way.

“The first layer is me talking about how I messed up, right, that takes some heat off of [the players],” Venable said. “The second part is everyone is going to make mistakes, right? I'm going to make mistakes, players are going to make mistakes, everyone is going to make mistakes. We need to have an environment where it's okay to make mistakes, we're not going to crumble because we make mistakes. We're going to make mistakes the right way. You're going to be accountable to it.”

For a White Sox roster asked constantly about their lack of experience, the idea that growing pains or protracted struggles are inevitable, rather than a source of shame, is brought up a lot. As the Sox’ arrive to October, they’ve felt the absence of an overbearing presence.

“Will's the man,” said shortstop Colson Montgomery. “Having a manager like that where you can kind of turn off the baseball player and turn on just being like, a man, like bros talking pretty much. So I think that's kind of what I've appreciated a lot about him. His communication is great.”

“He's a voice to be heard and he says what he needs to say when there's something that we need to address,” said starter Sean Burke. “But I think, honestly, one of his best traits is he let's us be a lot.”

In early September, Venable said few members of his team had experienced the abasement of individual priorities that postseason baseball requires, but he assumed they’d handle it well.

In a Wild Card Series sweep in Houston, his defacto No. 3 starter Anthony Kay agreed to a bullpen assignment to get the biggest outs of the clinching game, Grant Taylor affirmed he was good for a Game 1 ninth inning that took him to a career-high 54 pitches, and Burke went viral for a quote to the Sun-Times asserting his commitment to the team in such intense terms that he had to affirm he does have a real family, beyond just his White Sox teammates.

“It’s easier to put your body on the line when you’ve got guys like this around you,” Taylor said postgame Wednesday, after confirming he wasn’t actually available to pitch in Game 2.

In this environment, the bigger risk is Venable’s players offering him more than they can actually handle. He hopes he’s established it’s good to be honest.
