HOUSTON – In Game 2 of the White Sox’ Wild Card Series against the Astros, manager Will Venable is rolling out an identical lineup to Game 1 against Houston ace right-hander Hunter Brown.

Sam Antonacci, LF

Kyle Teel, C

Miguel Vargas, 3B

Munetaka Murakami, 1B

Andrew Benintendi, DH

Tristan Peters, CF

Braden Montgomery, RF

Chase Meidroth, 2B

Colson Montgomery, SS

“We’re going to have to attack and get him out of the game,” Antonacci said of Brown. “But he’s got good stuff, so it’ll be another good game.”

“He's had success against us,” said Meidroth. “It's a 9-on-1 situation, so we're going to keep competing, keep fighting and, yeah, we're not going to make it easy on him.”

Brown missed a month of the season with a right shoulder strain, but resembled the version of himself who finished third in American League Cy Young voting in 2025 in his two encounters against the White Sox this season. He allowed two runs in 13 innings of work, and didn’t yield a single extra-base hit.

“When you talk about an ace, he's one of those dudes,” said Venable of Brown. “He's a big dog in this league. He's got really big stuff. The fastball's going to be what we're going to start with, and we'll go and talk about it from a game-planning standpoint and how we want to attack that.

For his part, White Sox starter Burke also allowed just two earned runs across 11 ⅔ innings in his two starts against the Astros this year, with 16 strikeouts, and recently started the only Sox victory of a four-game series between these two teams that concluded earlier this month. Usually, repeated encounters between hitters and pitchers favor the offense, but Burke will try to flip that dynamic.

“You get to collect some data on them and how they have reacted, how they have put swings on different pitches, how they have reacted to certain sequences,” Burke said. “[I’m] using that information and watching that back and understanding what was their approach against me the first two times I faced them. And then trying to figure out pretty early what their approach is again against me this time.”

The pressing question after Game 1 is whether after a career-high 54 pitches on Tuesday, is top reliever Grant Taylor available to pitch. In a normal regular season series, it’s unlikely Taylor would pitch again at all in a three-game span. In the postseason, Venable wouldn’t rule out him pitching with an opportunity to clinch a series victory on Wednesday.

“He's going to go out here in a little bit and go out and throw, and so we'll see how he's doing,” Venable said of Taylor. “We'll take some inventory on him and Hagen [Smith] and the rest of the guys to see where we're at. I think the special thing about Grant is that he's often bounced back really well from these types of outings.”
