Will Schmidt could be forgiven if he lost track of every football position he plays.
He can be anywhere, at any time.
The IC Catholic junior’s primary positions are nickelback safety and receiver. But Schmidt will move around to outside receiver, wing, tight end, fullback, outside linebacker, occasionally inside linebacker and even punt returner.
“I see myself as being able to play any position,” Schmidt said. “If anything happens at any moment, I’m ready for anything.”
That versatility is useful for a Knights varsity roster that is only 27 or so deep, if they don’t take a number of the sophomores up.
Despite those low numbers, IC Catholic is one of two remaining unbeatens left in the Catholic League. The Knights take on the other undefeated team, top-ranked Loyola, on Friday.
Schmidt is third on IC Catholic in receptions with 18 for 153 yards and a touchdown. And he is third on the team in tackles with 39, six for a loss.
It shouldn’t surprise that Schmidt has the acumen to juggle so many assignments. He carries a 4.5 GPA and holds an offer from Yale. His older brother JP, a member of the 2022 IC Catholic state championship team, is now a junior at Yale.
“He’s like a coach on the field, helping with calls,” IC Catholic coach Bill Krefft said. “He has made some big plays for us. Screen pass, took it to the house against DePaul. There’s been a couple situations where he made big plays and saved us. With that high football IQ, he lets us adjust.”
Schmidt has strong mentors. His dad, Bill Schmidt, was head coach at IC Catholic for four seasons, winning a Class 2A state title in 2008, and is now the receivers coach and assistant offensive coordinator. Schmidt’s had two brothers go through the program before him.
“He helps when I go home, just to be able to look at film again, the repetition of being able to see different looks, being able to counter, seeing a different viewpoint,” Schmidt said.
“It means the world to me to be able to do this. It’s a dream come true to play with my dad on the sidelines with me.”
Schmidt is part of a secondary that is the backbone of the Knights defense along with sophomore Donnel Sallis, senior Jaden Penna and senior Anthony Carroccio, himself a Yale commit.
“Anthony has been solid at safety for us for a couple years; his range helps us a lot in our coverages, somebody that can make big plays, big tackles and big interceptions,” Krefft said. “Sometimes they will suggest a little too much, like why don’t you look at this, but it really is their football IQ making everyone around them better, lets them get to the line quickly and more aware of things. Our secondary group is the most veteran, the guiding force.”
Carroccio, who sports a 4.84 GPA in the classroom, takes his role as a guiding light seriously.
“I am a captain. I try to make sure everybody is learning what they can,” Carroccio said. “I like to teach the younger kids, help build them up.”
IC Catholic, with a third-year varsity quarterback in Nate Lang and top 50 recruit nationally in Grant Bowen, owns quality wins this season over Nazareth and St. Ignatius. Loyola is a different animal.
When the teams last played in 2023, IC Catholic was beat up and sat most of its star players. It was a running clock.
Schmidt said they’re treating this meeting like any other week, but they also welcome the challenge.
“It’s the opportunity of a lifetime to show the world who we are on our home turf,” Schmidt said. “We’re going after a big dog that everybody is scared of. The whole community should be there. It will be a great environment.”
