Demonstration against the Beneš decrees in Bratislava
The debate on the Beneš Decrees in the plenary session of the European Parliament turned into a “spectacle” in which there was no substantive discussion of the disenfranchisement of Hungarians in Slovakia, but rather pressure was exerted on Hungary and Slovakia under the pretext of the rule of law. We hereby document the statements made by the Hungarian speakers.
As Csaba Dömötör, MEP for Fidesz sees it, political pressure is being exerted on Hungary and Slovakia because they do not support the war policy.
Although the debate was about the Beneš Decrees, in his opinion it was really about exerting pressure.
He emphasized that his political community has been advocating for autochthonous minorities for two decades and rejects the principle of collective guilt. He also criticized the “grand coalition of the People’s Party” for rejecting his amendments to protect autochthonous minorities in the 2025 human rights report and for not even supporting the use of the term since 2022.
In his speech, Fidesz MEP András László criticized the European Commission for “ignoring the rights of national minorities for decades, including the situation of Hungarian communities in Slovakia, Transylvania, and Transcarpathia.”
He cited the Beneš decrees, the issue of language use and education, and forced recruitment in Ukraine as examples.
He said that only Fidesz-KDNP had consistently stood up for Hungarians across the border by facilitating dual citizenship and increasing subsidies, invoking the legacy of József Antall. While the Commission criticizes Hungary on issues of the rule of law and human rights, it collectively punishes Hungarians with its own decisions, which he described as unacceptable.
Viktória Ferenc, Fidesz MEP, described the debate as a “show” and said that the European Parliament was not discussing the disenfranchisement of Hungarians in Slovakia in any substantive way. She criticized the majority of the People’s Party and the left-liberals for not supporting her amendments to protect national minorities in the human rights report.
As a Hungarian from Transcarpathia, she condemned the principle of collective guilt and discrimination based on nationality and complained that the EU institutions were not taking action against the violation of minority rights in Ukraine.
In her speech, Fidesz MEP Annamária Vicsek criticized the fact that
the promised debate on the Beneš decrees had, in her opinion, once again turned into a political debate against a member state,
while the injustices against the indigenous national minorities were not being given adequate attention. She also recalled that despite more than a million signatures for the Minority SafePack initiative, no corresponding legislative initiative had been launched.
Zoltán Tarr, MEP for the TISZA party, said it was unacceptable for freedom of expression to be restricted by police measures and that the EU must take action against the logic of collective guilt and discriminatory government practices. His colleague Dóra Dávid spoke about how, in an EU member state, expropriations without compensation can take place on the basis of historical legislation, which in her opinion creates legal uncertainty and also jeopardizes the functioning of the internal market.
She called on the European Commission to examine the legality of this practice and to take measures to ensure that those who criticize this system in Slovakia are not disadvantaged or punished.
Klára Dobrev, MEP for the Democratic Coalition, said that in Slovakia, those who criticize the Beneš decrees are to be punished, while Viktor Orbán—who sees himself as a defender of the nation—is not raising his voice against the Fico government on this issue.
Zsuzsanna Borvendég, MEP for the Our Homeland Movement, pointed out that Central Europe had been the victim of imperialist “divide and rule” policies for centuries, and in her opinion, the European Commission was now trying to do the same. She believed that traditional values must be defended together with Slovakia, but that the disputes between the two countries must first be resolved.
She urged the repeal of the discriminatory parts of the Beneš Decrees and rejected the principle of collective guilt and the deprivation of rights.
She criticized the Slovak language law, the ban on dual citizenship, and the lack of cultural autonomy. In her opinion, Slovakia must guarantee the Hungarian community equal rights and the right to use their mother tongue.
