European Union leaders are holding informal talks to discuss issues related to strengthening the single market and improving the EU’s competitiveness. The discussions focus on the challenges arising from the changed geopolitical and economic environment and on reducing the EU’s economic dependence. The head of government said that peace is needed and that war is bad for the economy. Viktor Orbán also responded to Ukraine’s desire for a target date for EU accession.
On February 12, European Union leaders are meeting behind closed doors to discuss strengthening the single market and the future of EU competitiveness. At the meeting, Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta will also present their ideas on how the EU can respond to changes in the rules-based world order.

The Prime Minister wrote on his X page:
“EU leaders’ retreat: European competitiveness in focus. Three things need to be done:
1 Achieve peace War blocks growth and damages the economy
2 Spend wisely Don’t send money to Ukraine if it’s needed at home
3 Cut energy costs High prices are holding back our businesses ”
Viktor Orbán responded to the suggestion that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had set a target date for Ukraine’s accession by saying: “Dreams, dreams, sweet dreams.”
Speaking about Ukrainian threats, he noted:
Of course, every country protects its sovereignty, and so do we, and we will not allow ourselves to be threatened or blackmailed.”
The prime minister emphasized that we are here now because the European economy is in decline. Concerning Ukraine, PM Orbán wrote on X:

He added: In Brussels, they say that it is losing its competitiveness. We have come together to discuss what needs to be done to ensure that the European economy does not continue to decline, but instead rises and grows again. I think there are three things we need to do. This is the Hungarian position. The first is that we need peace, because there is war, the economy is blocked and cannot grow. War is bad for the economy, thus peace must be achieved as soon as possible.
He emphasized: “The second thing is that if you have money, and the EU has money, then do not send it elsewhere if you need it. For example, do not send it to Ukraine. Thus the second thing is that if we already have money and our economy is in decline, then we should not give our money to others, but spend it on ourselves. The third thing is that competitiveness, I mean, the number one problem for our companies, our businesses, is high energy prices, hence reduce energy prices, make decisions and cut energy prices.”
