Pedro Sánchez assesses the impact of his immigration policy in Ceuta
In their statements, Viktor Orbán and other politicians from the former governing parties pointed out that the European Union’s migration policy is responsible for the crisis in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The FIDESZ chairman also expressed his support for Spain’s allies in the “Patriots for Europe” EU parliament group.
The Spanish Ministry of the Interior says that 50,000 people have entered Ceuta illegally in recent days, whereas the Ceuta city government estimates the number at 60,000. Based on the latest figures, approximately 49,000 people have returned to Morocco.

Viktor Orbán stated on X. “Europe needs leaders who will defend its borders, restore order, and put the safety of their own citizens first,” he added. The issue is expected to be raised not only in the Spanish Congress of Deputies but also at the European Parliament session in September, as several political groups are pushing for it.

(@laszloan) MEP András László (FIDESZ) stated that the “Patriots for Europe” political group is also pushing to have the issue added to the agenda. On his social media page, the politician wrote: “Tens of thousands of migrants from Morocco and the sub-Saharan region have stormed Ceuta. They forced their way into the city by breaking through fences and tearing down walls.
Just like in the Middle Ages. This is not merely illegal migration—it is an occupation.”
The parliamentary group leader of the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) called on his Facebook page on Sunday for people to oppose the migration pact. Bence Rétvári—who described the images from Ceuta, Spain, as shocking—stated that the migration pact is an invitation to all illegal migrants to come to Europe.
He pointed out that, under the pact, the European Union could declare a migration crisis and impose new obligations on member states if a country were suddenly exposed to very high migration pressure.
In such a case, under EU regulations, the other member states must assume additional obligations, such as accepting illegal migrants or conducting the entire immigration and asylum process in another member state.
This is no trivial matter. It now poses a risk to every EU member state when tens of thousands of illegal migrants turn up in one EU country,”
said the Christian Democrat. Bence Rétvári emphasized that there were no such scenes in Hungary and that tens of thousands of illegal migrants were not appearing there because the Orbán government had erected a fence and was protecting the southern border with legal and physical border barriers. He made it clear that the Migration Pact would exploit this situation and that, due to the irresponsible migration policies of other countries, the remaining countries would have to assume responsibility.
The parliamentary group leader recalled that Hungary was the country that had never supported the adoption of the Migration Pact, yet it had been pushed through nonetheless. Now, he said, the first crisis situation had arisen.
Foreign Minister Anita Orbán announced on Saturday that Prime Minister Péter Magyar, along with 21 heads of state and government of the European Union, had also signed a letter criticizing the migration policy of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The signatories believe that the Spanish government’s measures weaken the protection of the EU’s external borders and are calling for a coordinated approach at the EU level to strengthen those borders.
