KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The White Sox have grander ambitions than the third wild card spot, or even the American League Central title.

“If we get to do what we want to do, we’re going to be playing in the ALDS, CS and hopefully the World Series,” said Grant Taylor.

But assistant general manager Jin Wong was the White Sox executive accompanying the team for their road series in Kansas City on Tuesday. After a victory and a Rangers loss to the Mets lowered the White Sox' magic number for clinching a wild card berth to two entering Wednesday, Chris Getz and Josh Barfield flew into town to join him.

It doesn’t appear Getz is in town to deliver a postgame message to the team about the importance of staying focused on catching the Cleveland Guardians. The franchise’s first playoff appearance in five years is something to celebrate.

“It would be everything,” starter Davis Martin said of the Sox clinching a playoff spot. “We've been wrapped up in the division [race], and that's still something that's been our goal since the beginning. But from a standpoint of where we've been the last three years, just to be a part of something like that and to turn around and be the spark plug to something that maybe continues on for five, six, seven, eight years, it's just exciting.”

Martin is the longest-tenured player on the White Sox, which only means he’s been around since 2022, but plenty of suffering has been packed into that window of time. He can remember being asked “how do you sleep at night” in interviews in 2024, as if playing for a bad baseball team was a black mark on his life. Even friends and family asked if he’d rather just be traded, just to get away.

“I told all of them: my goal would be to be a part of the team that turns it around,” Martin told the Sun-Times. “To be in the situation we are now, which felt like a pipe dream two years ago, and now it’s sitting there looking at you in the face. It's incredible.”

There’s historical precedent for how incredible it is for the White Sox to make the playoffs at all. No team in MLB history has reached the postseason after three-consecutive 100-loss seasons, and the expanded playoff field can only do so much to blunt that accomplishment. But Sox players — when they’re not quoting their dire preseason projections — more sharply note the difference in how it feels to be part of this team, compared to just two years prior.

“In the beginning of the year, nobody really believed in us and what we are doing and now look at us,” said All-Star third baseman Miguel Vargas. “If we do it, it’s going to mean a lot for us. I think it’s a special moment.”

Manager Will Venable has been cherishing moments in places like Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City and Busch Stadium in St. Louis that lack prominent out-of-town scoreboards to distract his players, and himself. But on nights like Wednesday, where the result of Rangers-Mets could dictate whether it’s possible for the Sox to clinch a historic playoff berth, and the result of Guardians-Red Sox could mean there’s a chance to pull ahead in the AL Central, it’s hard not to get curious.

"It's been a challenge the last couple of weeks, honestly,” Venable said. “It's part of this. It's the position that we've earned, that we're in.”

It will also say a lot about what the Sox are doing in the visitor’s locker room after the game. Teams like the Dodgers or Yankees might celebrate a Wild Card spot with a polite champagne toast and a short speech about larger goals. A team like the White Sox, with their shared history, will go a different route.

“It’s not really our speed,” Martin said of a polite toast. “We kind of do everything full-go. I don’t expect it to be casual.”

White Sox still want the division title, but earning a playoff berth ‘would be everything’ 2026
