    The European Commission is criticizing Hungary with the help of organizations that it finances for itself, wrote Csaba Dömötör, Fidesz MEP, in a Facebook post on Monday.

    In his post, the politician listed the organizations that are “collaborating” on the European Commission’s report on the rule of law in Hungary.

    And where do they get the money? From the European Commission,”

    he added.

    Csaba Dömötör also revealed the amount of funding for each organization: Mérték Médiaelemző Műhely (Mérték Media Monitoring Workshop) HUF 147,964,050 (EUR 389,000; EUR 1 = HUF 380), Hungarian Helsinki Committee HUF 519,763,615, Amnesty International Hungary HUF 155,549,69, Társaság a Szabadságjogokért (Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, TASZ) HUF 41,734,825, K-Monitor HUF 45,528,900, Transparency International Hungary HUF 193,420,815, Political Capital HUF 295,751,040, and Ökotárs Foundation HUF 1,478,755,200.

    Members of the European Parliament had already drawn attention to the danger that the discontinued USAID funding would be replaced by support from Brussels. Last May, Kinga Gál, vice-president of the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament and a member of the Fidesz party, stated that there was a pressing need to set up a committee of inquiry to investigate the transparency of NGO funding.

    Kinga Gál warned at the time that

    it was particularly worrying that left-wing factions in the European Parliament were demanding that the EU replace the funds previously paid by USAID to non-governmental organizations.

    “We cannot allow European taxpayers’ money to be further channeled into political activist networks that – in the disguise of civil society – weaken member states’ border protection efforts, launch campaigns against the interests of farmers, and organize political actions against democratically elected governments,” she pointed out.

    Based on the data now published, those fears appear to have been confirmed, as the list published by Csaba Dömötör includes organizations that were previously supported by USAID.
