Business sentiment among Hungarian companies has taken a turn for the better following the April parliamentary elections, emphasized Róbert Keszte, president of the German-Hungarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DUIHK), on Thursday in Budapest at an event presenting the chamber’s business report for the first half of 2026.
He promised that the DUIHK would continue to represent the interests of its members under the new government. Citing their survey, he emphasized that companies’ main expectations of the new government are measures related to human resources, strengthening the supplier network through the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, curbing corruption, and the introduction of the euro in Hungary.
These points are reflected in the Tisza Party’s platform, he noted, though the chamber would like to discuss the employment of workers from third countries, as they are necessary for the functioning of the Hungarian economy.
The chamber considers it important that businesses with foreign ownership receive equal opportunities within the subsidy system and that the demographic issues regarding the workforce be resolved.
The president of the DUIHK emphasized that the new government must introduce changes that improve Hungary’s competitiveness.
Dirk Wölfer, head of communications at the DUIHK, presented the detailed results of the economic survey, stating that their flash survey conducted after the election shows that companies’ expectations regarding the Hungarian economy have shifted compared to the pre-election period.
Before the election, 7 percent of respondents expected an improvement, while 48 percent expected a deterioration. After the election, 42 percent expected an improvement and 17 percent expected a deterioration.
He noted that sentiment had clearly shifted in a positive direction regarding expectations for their own companies as well, though not as markedly as for the economy as a whole.
“Willingness to invest increased after the election,” Dirk Wölfer emphasized. A quarter of those surveyed said they would increase their willingness to invest as a result of the election, while for half of the respondents, this had no impact on their investment plans. The proportion of those who continue to choose Hungary as an investment destination rose from 77 percent to 87 percent after the election, approaching the previous peak of 88 percent, noted the head of the communications department.

The election result also reshaped the risk landscape. In the pre-election survey, the most frequently cited risk factor was lack of demand, with 72 percent of respondents mentioning it, while after the election, the proportion citing this factor dropped to 51 percent. This is explained by the fact that half of those surveyed do not export, or export very little, and expect domestic demand to grow, added the chamber’s head of communications. Economic policy remains in second place, energy prices are considered a risk by every second business while fewer respondents cited labor costs and the shortage of skilled workers compared to previous surveys.
Satisfaction with the business environment in Hungary is generally in line with the average for the Central and Eastern European region.
For this year, the companies participating in the survey expect a 6.5 percent increase in labor costs, which is slightly lower than their forecast for the previous year, and they anticipate significant progress in curbing corruption.
Companies consider investment incentives important. 27 percent of respondents indicated that the availability of subsidies influenced their investment decisions. “In the industrial sector, this proportion reaches 36 percent, meaning that one in three development projects depends on state subsidies,” added Dirk Wölfer.
Seventy-five percent of those surveyed support the introduction of the euro. Demand for the euro is particularly strong in trade and the service sector, while in the manufacturing industry this figure stands at 68 percent.
Fact
The chamber has been conducting its business climate survey twice a year since 1994. For the spring 2026 survey, 264 companies were surveyed between March 2 and April 2. Following the election, 139 companies participated in the flash survey conducted between April 16 and 23.
