“The Mercosur agreement is being implemented even though the European Parliament (EP) did not approve it and has even taken the matter to court,” pointed out Csaba Dömötör, Fidesz MEP, in a Facebook post responding to Ursula von der Leyen’s announcement that the European Commission will begin provisional application of the agreement.
Csaba Dömötör added that Manfred Weber had already welcomed the decision, saying “respect to Uruguay and Argentina”.
The Fidesz MEP said:
South America is being given respect, while the protests of European farmers are being swept aside, even after a series of demonstrations”
The politician stated that farmers will have to compete with the world’s largest agricultural companies while receiving less support. “What they are doing is a targeted attack on European agriculture,” he wrote.

Enikő Győri, Fidesz MEP, wrote in a Facebook post that the European Commission is ultimately letting farmers down and straying from the path of democracy.
She said that after Argentina and Uruguay’s legislatures approved the EU-Mercosur agreement, it was expected that the European Commission would announce the provisional application of the trade part of the agreement.
According to Enikő Győri, by not waiting for the European Parliament’s position, the European Commission is completely disregarding the procedure laid down in the treaties. She said that the European Commission has strayed from the path of democracy and is exploiting legal loopholes.
She added that the Commission is ignoring the concerns raised by the European Parliament in January, on the basis of which the agreement was referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union, and that in the interests of transparency, it would have been appropriate to wait for the court’s opinion.
“In short, the European Commission respects neither the EU legal system nor democratic procedures. Farmers have been told in no uncertain terms that their concerns do not matter,” said the Fidesz MEP.
In her view, producers would have to work with less money, in greater and unfair competition, and under different conditions. She believed that Ukraine and other external countries were more important than those who produce high-quality European food.
Enikő Győri added that European farmers can continue to count on the Patriots (Patriots for Europe group – editor’s note), who will continue to fight for them in the future. In her words, “it is now clear that they can only count on us.”
