The European Commission’s investigation into EU information allegedly leaked by Hungary to Russia has not identified any serious security breaches, Balázs Ujvári, spokesperson for the European Commission stated in Brussels on Friday. The false allegations concerned Olivér Várhelyi, EU Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, who can now remain in his position.
The fake scandal broke our after USAID beneficiary Direkt36, widely considered to be one of the TISZA party’s campaign media, has published allegations about a spy-ring being involved around the Hungarian EU delegation. Péter Magyar has readily republished these allegations on his party’s website, and used the narrative in the election campaign as a proof of Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz being in the grip of a Kremlin-based network. The fake scandal is strongly reminiscent of the “Russiagate” scandal against President Donald Trump during the 2016 election campaign.
The falsehoods are still published on the TISZA Party’s website, claiming that “these covert activities did not serve exclusively Hungarian interests and may have been linked to the shift in Hungarian foreign policy toward Russia. Since 2015, the old guard trained in Moscow has gained strength within Hungarian diplomacy, and Hungarian foreign policy has since increasingly operated according to the logic of the Orbán–Putin axis.” Later similar allegations against former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó have followed a similar pattern.
At the Brussels body’s regular daily press conference though, the EU spokesperson responded to a question by stating: the relevant services of the European Commission have concluded their investigation, and based on this:
The Commission has concluded that no serious security breach can be identified in connection with the allegations that appeared in the media.
Based on the information gathered during the investigation and the tools available to us within the European Commission, no serious security breach can be identified, nor can any individual responsibility or involvement be established — the EU spokesperson added.
In recent times, several Hungarian government contacts and communications related to Russia have also come under scrutiny as an organic part of Péter Magyar’s election campaign. A telephone conversation was also recently made public in suspicious circumstances in which Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, speaks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Reacting to the leak of the recording, Péter Szijjártó stated at the time that foreign intelligence services continue to interfere in the Hungarian parliamentary elections. According to the minister, foreign intelligence services are eavesdropping on and leaking telephone conversations with the assistance of Hungarian journalists.
Another false allegation has been debunked. Claims targeting @OliverVarhelyi in connection with spying allegations turned out to be completely unfounded.

“It has come to light that Péter Szijjártó, Sergey Lavrov’s bag carrier, does not represent Hungarian or European interests, but instead informs the Russian leadership via a hotline, passing on confidential information. The Hungarian Criminal Code defines this as treason. And, by the way, it prescribes a punishment of life imprisonment. I am just saying this for the record,” said Péter Magyar during his election rally in Békés. Péter Magyar is yet to retract his earlier claims.
