  • One of the most important projects is the M49 expressway, that will create a direct connection between the M3 motorway and the Romanian border at Csenger.
  • In the west of the country, work is concentrated on the busiest section of Hungary: the M1 motorway between Budapest and Győr is being expanded from two to three lanes in each direction.
  • With a total length of over 2,000 kilometers of expressways to be reached in 2026, Hungary is consolidating its role as a central logistics hub in Central Europe.

Next year marks a turning point for Hungary’s highway network. With the completion of strategic sections in the east and the launch of major projects in the west, the government is pushing ahead with the country’s economic integration. The goal is for every municipality to be able to reach an expressway in a maximum of 20 minutes.

Despite the widespread impression that the major wave of motorway construction has eased, Hungary is set to experience a significant year of traffic openings and new construction starts in 2026. The focus is now particularly on connections to neighboring Romania and Austria, as well as the development of industrial sites such as Esztergom (northern Hungary), Világgazdaság reports.

One of the most important projects is the M49 expressway, that will create a direct connection between the M3 motorway and the Romanian border at Csenger.

Construction work on the Mátészalka–Ököritófülpös section is progressing rapidly, with asphalting and road marking work already well advanced. The road is scheduled to open to traffic in fall 2026. This route will serve as a key economic driver for the region, connecting the Hungarian core network directly with the city of Satu Mare (Szatmárnémeti) in Romania.

One milestone that has already been completed will see its first full year of operation in 2026: the 34-kilometer section of the M4 between Törökszentmiklós and Kisújszállás. The four-lane expansion and bypassing of town centers will significantly reduce travel time toward the eastern border. At the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán emphasized that the accessibility of expressways is a core promise of Hungarian structural policy.

In the west of the country, work is concentrated on the busiest section of Hungary: the M1 motorway between Budapest and Győr is being expanded from two to three lanes in each direction.

In addition to the pure capacity expansion, the route will be equipped with intelligent traffic control and modernized rest areas. While the main work will peak in 2026, the entire project is scheduled for completion in 2028–2029.

Another key project set to gain momentum in 2026 is the M100, that will link the industrial city of Esztergom directly to the M1. The financial aspect is noteworthy: Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár stated that optimizations have lowered the budget from the initial 500 billion forints (1.3 billion euros) to 400 billion forints (1 billion euros). Construction on this technically demanding project—that also involves new junctions for a planned Danube bridge—is slated to begin in spring 2026.

With a total length of over 2,000 kilometers of expressways to be reached in 2026, Hungary is consolidating its role as a central logistics hub in Central Europe.

The investments not only serve to improve travel comfort, but also form the basis for further industrial growth and the integration of rural regions into global freight traffic.
