    At the Summit of the European Political Community in Yerevan, a diplomatic shift in Central and Eastern Europe began to take shape. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced his intention to play a key role in normalizing the strained relations between Budapest and Kyiv.

    Following a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Donald Tusk addressed the press on Monday. The main topic of the discussion was the preparation of the international reconstruction conference for Ukraine, which is scheduled to take place next June in Gdańsk, northern Poland. Beyond economic planning, the focus was on a political figure, the future Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar.

    Donald Tusk stated that Kyiv has high hopes for Hungary’s new political leadership—and for Poland’s role as a mediator.

    The Ukrainian side has expressed the wish that the Polish government “take care of” Magyar and help facilitate the stalled communication between Kyiv and Budapest.

    “In this case, ‘taking care’ means actively promoting cooperation,” explained the Polish prime minister. “Relations between Ukraine and Hungary have been very strained recently. It is in the interest of all of Europe that full trust be restored here,” he added.

    Donald Tusk emphasized that Ukraine is explicitly counting on the personal rapport between the Polish and the new Hungarian heads of government.

    “I think they will not be disappointed,” he said confidently.

    An official visit by Magyar to Poland is already imminent. The Polish prime minister confirmed that he would receive his future counterpart “shortly” in Warsaw. The reshaping of Hungarian foreign policy toward Ukraine will be at the top of the agenda.

    Behind the diplomatic platitudes of “cooperation” and “trust” lie concrete political demands. It is assumed that Tusk’s mission is to firmly integrate Magyar into the EU’s pro-Ukrainian camp. Specifically, the aim is likely to be to persuade the new Hungarian government to take the following steps:

    • Financial support: Participation in aid packages for Kyiv.
    • Military aid: A shift away from the previous stance of blocking arms deliveries.
    • EU integration: Active support for Ukraine’s accession aspirations in Brussels.

    Whether the announced fresh start will actually succeed or whether the deep rifts of the past will remain will become clear when Magyar arrives in Warsaw for his inaugural visit.
