With an outstanding performance in the second half, Ferencváros (FTC) won 3-2 against RB Salzburg in the third round of the Europa League on Thursday evening, after previously trailing by one goal. This was revenge for the Hungarian champions for the humiliation of the Ferencváros fans, whose special train had been turned back at the border by the Austrian authorities.
In a spectacular and exciting encounter, especially in the second half, Barnabás Varga, Kristoffer Zachariassen, and Yusuf Bamidele scored for the Green-Whites within just eight minutes. Ferencváros missed a penalty in the first half through Varga.

Despite heavy rain and soggy ground, the pace of the game was good in the first ten minutes, with both teams making honest attempts to attack. However, there were no really dangerous situations in front of either goal during this phase, then Salzburg took the lead almost out of nowhere.

Ferencváros slightly changed their style of play after falling behind, and their first well-executed move ended with a penalty for handball. However, Varga’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Schlager, which gave the hosts a boost, but the Hungarian team soon regrouped and tried again with more promising moves, which were repeatedly thwarted by mistakes.

After the half-time break, Ferencváros quickly equalized, and the Green-Whites took control of the game,
scoring two goals in two minutes, which not only gave them the lead but also a clear advantage. With this lead, Robbie Keane’s protégés played excellently and could have scored more goals, but they were unable to finish their moves successfully.
Towards the end of the game, the home team gained new strength and soon took advantage of the uncertainty in the FTC defense to reduce the deficit. This goal gave the Salzburg team, who had been putting a lot of pressure on their opponents for a while, a further boost, but then the FTC players, refreshed by substitutions, once again launched some nice attacks, which, however, again failed to produce a goal.
In the final minutes, the Hungarian team had to concentrate hard in defense, but ultimately managed to hold on to their one-goal lead until the final whistle and celebrate a fine victory in Salzburg.

Head coach Robbie Keane’s team has earned seven points in three matchdays and is now in a position in the group stage that qualifies them for the round of 16. Ferencváros will host Bulgarian club Ludogorez in the fourth round in two weeks.
According to FTC, the special train that was supposed to transport Ferencváros fans to Thursday’s game was turned back at the Hungarian-Austrian border without explanation, following a decision by the Austrian Interior Ministry. “This shameful action is reminiscent of the worst years of Austrian oppression, is incomprehensible, unacceptable, and extremely unsportsmanlike. according to the published protest note. In a video posted on the club’s social media page, Robbie Keane called it shameful and ridiculous that fans were not allowed to attend the match.
Péter Szijjártó called it outrageous and scandalous that Hungarian fans were not allowed to enter Austria.
The chief diplomat announced that the Austrian ambassador had been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
In his Facebook post, the minister wrote that the Austrian railway company and the Austrian police had accused each other of stalling the fans and the Hungarian police officers with whom they had searched the passengers again, promising them that they could continue their journey, “and then leaving them all standing there and leaving the place.”
“I hope that the players on the field will take satisfaction for this incident with a big victory!” Péter Szijjártó added. The players complied with this request.
