Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s former press secretary spoke out about how she perceived the enormous contradiction between Ukraine’s national interest and his former boss’ attitude towards the leader of a neighboring EU country. In a shocking interview for American journalist Tucker Carlson, Julia Mendel spoke about corruption, drug use and authoritarian leadership in Kyiv.
Julia Mendel was President Zelenskyy’s press secretary between 2019 and 2021. In the newly released interview she spoke candidly about corruption in the highest levels in Kyiv, as well as expressed her view that President Zelenskyy has lost the support of the Ukrainian people, that being the main reason why elections have not been called for years.
She also pointed at the discrepancy between the President’s posturing as the only legitimate politician in Ukraine who can lead the nation to victory, and his controversial behavior towards other European leaders, whose goodwill and support the country depends on. She found the Ukrainian leader’s behavior counterproductive, when President Zelenskyy attacked former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in front of other EU leaders at a recent conference.
“There was this Munich Security Conference (February 13-15, ed. note)”, she recalled a recent international summit in Germany.
Zelenskyy insulted* the Prime Minister of Hungary, Mr. Orbán. If you are a rational person, think about this. The leader of Ukraine, standing in front of all the leaders, keeps insulting one of the European leaders. In a week, this European leader will need to voted for a 90 billion loan for Ukraine,”
Ms. Mendel said on the Tucker Carlson show. “And obviously Orbán just blocked everything. And everybody was just pointing fingers at Orbán, how bad Orbán is. Perhaps he is, I am not justifying Orbán here. But if you are a leader of a country, how on earth are you insulting a person from whom you will need support, a 90 billion loan, without which Ukraine just cannot go further”, the former press secretary concluded.
The interview comes amid a fresh corruption scandal that leads right into the Ukrainian President’s office. Yesterday, Mr. Zelenskyy’s former chief of staff has reportedly been charged with money laundering by the country’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office. He is alleged to have illegally funneled as much as $8.9 million into a private construction project.
The aforementioned 90 billion European loan was not so much withheld as a result of Mr. Zelenskyy’s personal insults, but rather because the Kyiv government had decided to close the Druzhba oil pipeline carrying Russian crude oil to Hungary and Slovakia. Many accuse the Ukrainian president of using oil transit as a political weapon to influence the outcome of the April Hungarian elections. Shortly after Kyiv’s preferred candidate, Péter Magyar, was confirmed as the winner of the elections, Mr. Zelenskyy has reopened the oil pipeline. As promised, then Prime Minister Viktor Orbán then withdrew his veto against he EU loan.
Since the inauguration of the new TISZA Party-dominated parliament in Hungary, no foreign government, mainstream media, or NGO, has taken issue with the fact that Hungary continues to buy Russian oil and gas.
(*) Ms. Mendel uses the expression “assaulted” in the original text, but the context makes it clear that she has meant “insulted”. We have substituted the latter in place of the first. Ed. note.
