A gigantic Márai-themed postcard by Bálint Bence Kéry won first prize from the jury
The opening of the group exhibition “Márai in Buda” took place at the Museum of Hungarian Culture in Slovakia in Bratislava (Pozsony), reports ma7.sk.
To mark his 125th birthday, the city administration of Buda Castle declared 2025 the Sándor Márai Memorial Year and, as part of this, issued a call for submissions of visual artworks under the title “Márai in Buda.” The submitted entries were evaluated by a jury of art experts; and the selected works can now be viewed by interested visitors in Budapest, Dunajská Streda, and Bratislava.
The submitted works consist largely of paintings, prints, and photographs, as well as, to a lesser extent, works of applied arts, which are sometimes more closely, sometimes more loosely connected to the writer’s creative work, artistic stance, and personality.
At the exhibition’s opening ceremony, Tímea Nagy, museum director, Pál Venyercsan, director of the Liszt Institute in Bratislava, and Eszter Bauer, former councilor for culture at Buda Castle, delivered welcoming remarks.
In his writings, questions of civic values, identity, loyalty, and homeland emerge with such universal validity that they still resonate with readers today,”
said Tímea Nagy. She added that Márai’s life journey, spanning multiple countries and eras, enables the writer to build a bridge between cultures and nations.
In his welcoming remarks, Pál Venyercsan explained, among other things, that the exhibition is linked not only to a body of literary work but also to the intellectual legacy that, through Sándor Márai’s work, continues to shape the cultural thinking of our region to this day. The director also informed those present that the exhibition would travel from Bratislava to Banská Bystrica (Besztercebánya), where the exhibition opening will take place on May 21.
“After his birthplace of Košice (Kassa), Sándor Márai felt most at home in Buda, a place he often reflected on later during his exile,” said Eszter Bauer in her welcoming speech.
This is also evidenced by the chestnut leaf he took with him overseas from one of the chestnut trees on Mikó Street; this leaf was also the symbol of the commemorative year and appears in several works in the current exhibition,”
said the city councilor, who believes that the diversity of the submitted works also demonstrates that Márai’s thinking and his life’s work continue to have an impact and provide inspiration even today.
The exhibition was opened by its curator, art historian Katalin T. Nagy, who noted that Márai, even as a writer, had a deep interest in the visual arts. “Throughout his life, he turned to visual culture with great interest, for he believed:
Art is not entertainment, but a response to the universe,”
the curator emphasized. She also reported that, as part of the Budapest competition, works by more than 30 artists were brought to Bratislava.
“All generations are represented in the exhibition; most of the works are paintings, but there are also glass, textiles, photography, and a very large number of prints on display,” said the art historian.
