The one thing that links all left-wing, liberal or globalist parties in the post-communist Hungarian political landscape is not only their hatred for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, but also their active contempt for the Hungarian minority living beyond the borders of the motherland. The recent performance of the Tisza party in southern Slovakia’s Komárno (Komárom) has proved that they are no different.
The event titled “Hungarian Community: Democracy or Dictatorship” held in the Kortina cafe in the historic town of anti-Ottoman and anti-Habsburg Hungarian resistance, now in southern Slovakia, started rather ominously, when the microphones refused to work, and one of the main guests has failed to turn up. Alexandra Borbély, the Slovakian-born actress wife of Tisza party activist Ervin Nagy was a no-show despite her past complaints about the alleged exploitation of the Hungarian minority for the purposes of Viktor Orbán’s political ambitions. Such opinions do linger in opposition circles due to the fact that Hungarians living in Slovakia with dual citizenship, who are entitled to vote in Hungarian parliamentary elections, overwhelmingly vote for national-conservative parties.
The two dozen or so people, many of them journalists, had to wait for Tisza party leader Péter Magyar’s right-hand-man, actor Ervin Nagy, who himself was late. The purpose of the event? Apart from promoting the Tisza party among Hungarians in Slovakia, it was the introduction of an alliance between Zsolt Simon’s nearly unknown Forum party and Stefan Hamran’s liberal SaS (Freedom and Solidarity). Forum, a formerly Hungarian party, does not even register on recent opinion polls in Slovakia, while the SaS is a globalist, euro-enthusiast left-wing party whose leader, Jaroslav Nad’s only claim to fame is his inexplicable unilateral decision to gift the entire Slovakian air force, fighter jets, parts, munitions, air defenses, to Ukraine while working as the defense minister of the previous government.
For his part, actor and Tisza Party activist Ervin Nagy, true to his form, was so absorbed in speaking about his own achievements to such an extent, that he almost forgot to address the intended leading topic of the event, “dictatorship” in Hungary. What he omitted though was duly supplied through anti-Hungarian diatribes from Mr. Simon and Hamran, not only criticizing the current Hungarian government, but also laying into Hungarians themselves, mainly those living in Slovakia.
Stefan Hamran, who himself has some Hungarian ancestry, went on to attack the Hungarian Alliance party, the largest party representing the Hungarian minority in Slovakia, but he did not spare the Hungarian voters in Slovakia either for voting conservative in previous elections. Sharing the stage with the Tisza party’s chief ideologue, he urged voters from the Hungarian minority, numbering some 400.000 in Slovakia, to vote for the pro-Brussels liberals of the SaS party, instead of voting along national lines.

The event that preached tolerance and solidarity against what they described as the “oppression” of the Orbán regime, has itself quickly descended into a shouting match, when someone from the audience has raised an opinion that was different from those sitting on the panel. The audience member, who clearly refused to follow the anti-Hungarian script, could not even finish his question without being constantly interrupted by members of the panel. In a condescending tone, former police chief Hamran has even accused the audience member of not understanding culture and gave a patronizing reply calling this person’s education into question. The questioner himself took offense at such a response, thus the finale to the small-scale event has ended on a somewhat bitter note.
What the event has helped us to clarify beyond any reasonable doubt is that there is no tangible change in the Hungarian left’s approach to our national-minorities at all. Under former socialist prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsány the left has in 2004 launched a campaign against granting Hungarian citizenship to members of the minority Hungarian community in surrounding countries. After Prime Minister Orbán took office in 2010, representatives of the Hungarian radical left have made a number of campaign trips to Romania and Slovakia speaking out against Hungarian parties there, and urging minorities to vote for liberals instead. The far-left Momentum movement for instance, once touted as Hungary’s next government party, were notorious for their attempts to drive a wedge between Hungarians abroad. However, instead of succeeding among communities that have successfully defended and preserved their identities for centuries, all of these Hungarophobic parties have now disappeared from our political spectrum.

If this trend continues, Péter Magyar’s Tisza party could end up following in their path. Magyar’s recent “pilgrimage” to Transylvania in Romania, where he tried to mobilize the Hungarian community numbering over a million against Viktor Orbán’s government, has ended in humiliation. Arguably, his right-hand-man, Ervin Nagy’s deeply misguided performance in Slovakia fared no better. The Tisza party may be making headway among city-dwellers in Hungary, but their metropolitan-globalist demagoguery falls on deaf ears among the identity-conscious Hungarian minority in surrounding countries. Performances such as the one in Komárno only expose the opposition Tisza party as yet another left-wing, foreign-sponsored venture glued together in order to undermine Hungarian national unity.
