As long as Hungary has a national government, we will never approve the Mercosur agreement, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a video posted on Facebook.
The head of government sent a message to farmers: hold on, you have been deceived.
He emphasized that farmers are angry because not only was a decision made against them, but they were also “treated like fools” and are being tricked.
He reminded them that according to the rules, an international trade agreement must also be approved by national parliaments.

he said.
He added: Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and the Commission outmaneuvered the national parliaments by creating an auxiliary rule, saying that the signed agreement could be applied temporarily in the meantime.
“That is why farmers are angry. It is not just about the economic issues of Mercosur, not just about the future of agriculture, but also about the fact that farmers have been deceived, national parliaments have been bypassed, and decisions have been made that are disadvantageous and harmful to farmers,” he said, adding that this is why they are now protesting in Strasbourg and demanding Ursula von der Leyen’s resignation. “They are right,” he noted.

In front of the European Parliament thousands of Hungarian farmers joined the protests against the withdrawal of EU agricultural subsidies, misguided trade policy measures, and the lack of legal certainty, confirmed the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK).
In addition to 4,000 participants from French agricultural organizations, protesters arrived from several EU member states, including the NAK and the National Association of Hungarian Farmers’ Circles and Farmers’ Cooperatives (Magosz).
Producers complained that Brussels had “forced through” the Mercosur agreement, which is harmful to European agriculture and the food industry, at the European Council. The agreement allows food imports from South American countries where regulations are much less stringent than EU standards, posing a serious food safety risk to Europe, they wrote.
They also oppose the reform of the EU’s common agricultural policy because, it means a withdrawal of resources. Instead of unfavorable changes, a multi-year financial framework could be used to address changes in the market environment, rising production costs, and increasingly stringent EU requirements. Agricultural communities expect a regulatory environment that provides farmers with clear frameworks, reduced administration, and a predictable future, they added.
