    U.S. vice president J.D. Vance

    “J.D. Vance’s visit to Hungary comes at a time when Europe’s future, security, and identity are the subject of debate, and the U.S. vice president’s views align on several points with the principles that Hungary has consistently championed in the debate over the future of the Western world,” the Prime Minister’s Political Director stated in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

    According to Balázs Orbán, J.D. Vance’s visit marks another milestone in “the golden age of U.S.-Hungarian relations.” He is the first sitting U.S. vice president to visit Hungary on an official bilateral trip since the fall of communism, and the highest-ranking U.S. visitor since George W. Bush’s trip to Budapest in 2006.

    The politician went on to write that in the debate over the future of the Western world, the U.S. vice president’s words carry particular weight, as Vance believes Brussels has led Europe down a disastrous path. Balázs Orbán then quotes the American politician’s earlier remarks. According to these, “Europe’s greatest threat is not Russia or China—it comes from within. […] There is no security if society collapses from within. […] Europe faces the risk of civilizational suicide. […] No external enemy can destroy Europe if Europe does not give up on itself.

    To support this, he also quoted the vice president, who said, “Democracy rests on the sacred principle that the voice of the people matters. […] You cannot preserve democracy by suppressing the will of your own people. […] If you are afraid of your own voters, even America cannot help.”

    J.D. Vance, Balázs Orbán continued, also drew attention to the censorship in Brussels targeting conservative voices, which Hungarian national forces are currently suffering from as well, especially on social media.

    In this regard, he said: “The problem is not that people say bad things—but that governments are afraid to hear them. […] Censorship is not a sign of strength. It is a sign of weakness.” Furthermore, the Trump administration’s second-in-command shares Hungary’s view on migration: “Mass migration without assimilation is not compassion—it is chaos. […] No nation can survive if it does not protect its own borders,” the post states.

    The U.S. vice president’s visit is not only significant from a diplomatic standpoint, but also clearly signals that voices emphasizing the primacy of sovereignty and security are growing louder in the transatlantic sphere as well, wrote Balázs Orbán.
