Although inflation accelerated in Hungary in March, it remained well below preliminary expectations, based on the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH)’s data.
As reported by the Oeconomus Economic Research Foundation, in March 2026, inflation accelerated from 1.4% in February to 1.8% on an annual basis. Even so, the indicator remains below the Hungarian National Bank (MNB)’s inflation tolerance band (2–4%). While in February the base effect helped slow inflation and price adjustments at the start of the year were much lower than usual, in March the base effect provided less support, and the global inflationary effects of the Middle East conflict are also beginning to show up, albeit in a muted way, in domestic prices. The March inflation figures came as a positive surprise to the market and analysts; based on earlier expectations, a more dynamic acceleration in inflation had been anticipated (median forecast: 2.2%, year-on-year). Core inflation, which measures underlying inflation trends, slowed from 2.1% in February to 1.9% (year-over-year), confirming the positive trends.
From February to March, consumer prices rose by 0.4% (month-over-month), which is not unusual for this time of year; specifically:
- Food prices fell by an average of 0.1% (0.6% excluding food services)
- Household energy prices remained flat
- Service prices rose by an average of 0.2%
- Fuel prices rose by 4.6%.
In recent weeks, uncertainty has risen significantly due to the conflict in the Middle East, and risk aversion has intensified in global financial markets, which was also reflected in the weakening of the forint. From February to March, the forint weakened by 2.8% against the euro and by 5.2% against the dollar (MNB mid-market rate).
Given the current market volatility, it is important to note that exchange rate effects do not appear immediately for most products, but with a delay; moreover, the previous strengthening of the forint has not yet been fully factored into prices everywhere, so companies still have some leeway before having to adjust their prices.
Globally, the world market price of crude oil has surged due to the conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The market price of Brent crude has remained above $100 per barrel, averaging $103.7 in March according to World Bank data. The global market price of crude oil rose by an average of more than 40% from February to March. The conflict in the Middle East is thus driving up prices globally, which is severely affecting every economy. The main question in this case, too, is at what pace these developments will feed through to consumer prices.
Fuel prices would react to these developments the fastest, almost immediately, as they are being driven up simultaneously by rising global crude oil prices and the weakening of the forint.
