In view of the weather conditions with extreme snowfall, severe frosts, and snowdrifts, the Hungarian government has declared a state of emergency for infrastructure. Under the leadership of Interior Minister Sándor Pintér, a task force has been formed to guarantee the safety of the citizens and the functioning of the country.
The state road operating company Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt. is preparing for several waves of heavy snowfall and the risk of snowdrifts. Over 360 snowplows are already in continuous operation, the company announced.

On Monday alone, over 6,000 tons of road salt and almost half a million liters of calcium chloride solution were used.
Despite the heavy demand, the main road maintenance depots still have over 100,000 tons of road salt and over two million liters of calcium chloride solution in stock.
In his morning report, Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár said that the early hours of the morning had passed without incident and there had been no serious accidents.
However, caution is advised, as the main and secondary roads are slushy and snowy across almost the entire country, with another dose of snow expected in the afternoon.
Although rail operations have so far been running without any major incidents, apart from isolated delays due to icy points in the Budapest area, the government continues to maintain first-degree snow alert on the railways.
Due to winter road conditions, buses have been operating with increased travel times since Tuesday morning.
Delays and occasional cancellations are to be expected.
Colonel General Gábor Böröndi, Chief of the General Staff, stated that the Hungarian Defense Forces are on standby to provide technical assistance in particularly affected regions.
Detailed, regionalized weather forecasts are being produced every six hours to enable a rapid response.
At the same time, the Ministry of Energy has ordered electricity and gas suppliers (MVM, E.ON, OPUS) to be on alert. Gábor Czepek, Parliamentary State Secretary, emphasized that immediate intervention capacities are available in the event of line breaks due to snow pressure. The strategic fuel supply by the MOL Group is also secured.

In order to ensure medical care even in the event of power failures, the Ministry of the Interior has ordered the immediate trial operation of emergency power generators in all state hospitals. Priority is being given to wards for the seriously injured and life-support departments.
The protection of the most vulnerable members of society was also discussed.
- Homeless assistance: With a current occupancy rate of approximately 80 percent (78.7 percent in Budapest), there are sufficient places available in heated shelters.
- Schools: The Ministry of Education guarantees that classrooms will be heated. If the temperature falls below 20 degrees Celsius on two consecutive days, school administrators are instructed to order extraordinary breaks.
The spokesperson for the National Directorate General for Disaster Management (OKF), Dániel Mukics, issued a particular warning for the second half of the week. In the coming days snowdrifts, further snowfall and freezing rain are to be expected, with temperatures of up to minus 15 degrees Celsius.
The authorities are making an urgent appeal to all citizens:
- Check vehicles: Only drive with winter equipment, a full tank, and emergency supplies (blankets, tea, charged cell phone).
- Obtain information: Regular checks of the websites utinform.hu (road conditions) and met.hu (weather) as well as the use of the VÉSZ app are recommended.
- Neighborhood assistance: Citizens are asked to pay particular attention to elderly people living alone or people with disabilities.
- Heating safety: Due to the extreme cold, warnings have been issued about the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning; heating appliances should never be used without adequate ventilation.
The task force will continuously assess the situation over the coming days and take further measures if necessary.

The snow situation will continue to worsen today; please take good care of yourselves,” the prime minister wrote on Tuesday morning.
