Prime Minister-elect Péter Magyar
Robert Fico stated that the accusation that Viktor Orbán supported his campaign with illegal immigrants is false. As the claim comes from Péter Magyar, he will demand an explanation from the future Hungarian prime minister at their first meeting.
On Monday, April 13, following the election, future Prime Minister Péter Magyar held an international press conference at which he stated that unlike outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, he would not release legally convicted human traffickers from Hungarian prisons, and claimed that Orbán’s government had supported Robert Fico’s victory in the Slovak parliamentary elections on September 30, 2023, by releasing human traffickers and migrants at the Slovak border.
In a Facebook video posted Saturday evening, Fico stated that he would ask Magyar for an explanation regarding illegal migration during their first meeting, as he believes the future prime minister of Hungary made a false statement, Index reported.
According to Fico, these are baseless accusations.
I understand that politicians say all sorts of things under the influence of the emotional turmoil before and after elections, but I cannot accept that the good relations between Slovakia and Hungary are being jeopardized by irresponsible and unfounded political statements,”
said the Slovak prime minister.
Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas-SD) also described the claims made by the future Hungarian prime minister as “nonsense that is outrageous,” as reported by Slovak newspaper Hlavné správy.
On the talk show “V politike” on news channel TA3, the politician emphasized that Orbán was the only politician who had fought against illegal migration at that time. At the same time, the minister asked where Magyar had obtained such information, since he had not yet taken office as prime minister.
“According to the information available to me, this is just as nonsensical as transporting water in a woven basket,” Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) stated on Thursday during a meeting of the parliamentary committee responsible for European affairs, emphasizing that Magyar had not substantiated this claim in any way, as reported by the felvidék.ma portal.
