Hunor Kelemen, President of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) said that they want to tell the families who emigrated during the uncertainty of the 1990s and the period that followed and settled abroad that they are still considered members of the Hungarian community in Transylvania and are welcome to return home.
He explained that while they encourage Hungarian families who emigrated to return home, they do not pressure them to do so, however, Transylvania has changed a lot in recent years and decades, its infrastructure has developed, services have improved, and its economic prospects are good, while at the same time it is a safe place.
“I had the good fortune to meet young people from Sândominic to Satu Mare and from Carei to Brașov who had lived abroad for a few years and then returned home to start families, and they all emphasized that while material things are important in life, there is something even more important, namely that they want to raise their children at home.
That is why we are launching this program to encourage people to return home, because we believe that Transylvania will be a good place to live in the coming decades, a safe place, and that growth is definitely on the horizon,”
explained the President of the RMDSZ.
In order to understand the needs and fears associated with moving back home and to provide the most effective assistance, the RMDSZ asks those affected to fill out a consultation form on the Erdelyhazavar.ro website launched for this purpose.

The originator of the program, Árpád Antal, Mayor of Sfântu-Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy) and President of the RMDSZ National Council of Local Governments, said that in their experience, Transylvanians living abroad do not primarily lack financial assistance to return home, but rather guidance “through the maze of Romanian bureaucracy.”
The dysfunctionality of the country’s institutions almost drives us out of Romania. That is why it is important to make it clear to everyone that Transylvania welcomes everyone home, and of course, various public policies need to be built on this.”
This could mean that, at the city level, we give free land to those who move back home, as well as free house plans if they want to build. I am giving an example that works in Sfântu Gheorghe, for example. But there are other very good examples elsewhere, such as rent subsidies. We are collecting these examples, sharing them with each other, and trying to make this system as uniform as possible from Satu Mare to Sfântu-Gheorghe, Miercurea Ciuc, Târgu Mureș, and Cluj-Napoca, so that those living abroad will move back home,” explained the President of the municipal council.
He added that the RMDSZ is launching a program to help school-age children catch up on their Romanian language studies, and can also help solve problems related to the recognition of degrees obtained abroad.
RMDSZ leaders emphasized that they chose the international airport in Târgu Mureș to announce the homecoming program because the airport, which has undergone significant developments recently, will become one of the important gateways for international traffic in Transylvania with the launch of new flights in March, through which it will be possible not only to leave but also to return.
It was stated at the press conference that Romania’s Hungarian population has decreased by approximately 700,000 over the last 35 years, but experience shows that more people want to return than emigrate, which is why the RMDSZ considers it important to help them return home.
