Every January, a centuries-old tradition brings together representatives of the wine orders and winemakers of the region at the National Historical Memorial Park in Ópusztaszer. On Saturday, January 24, it was that time again. Experts and wine lovers gathered for the feast of St. Vincent to take a first look at the upcoming wine year.
The focus of the ceremony was István Kalmár, wine judge from Mórahalom (southern Hungary). For 30 years, he has been assessing the “Kövidinka” grapevines in the open-air museum of the memorial park. His verdict after the traditional cutting of the Vincent rods:
The vines are healthy and the buds are well developed.
Nevertheless, last summer’s drought left its mark. “The vines are slightly less developed than in previous years,” explained Kalmár. However, he emphasized that the plants are currently in a deep state of dormancy. If there is sufficient rainfall in the spring, the deficit can be easily made up. The experts’ forecast is therefore optimistic, with a good and satisfactory harvest in sight.

The custom does not end in the vineyard. The cut vines were taken home by the winegrowers to be placed in water in a warm room. According to popular belief, the speed and strength of the budding not only predicts the size of the harvest, but also determines the perfect time for the actual pruning.
Over the last 35 years, the meeting in Ópusztaszer has developed into an important event for Hungarian wine knights from home and abroad.
Around 70 representatives from 17 different orders took part in this year’s event, including guests from Vojvodina (Serbia), Horgoš, and Bajmok. They are all united by their veneration of Saint Vincent of Saragossa. The saint’s name lends itself to a play on words, especially in viticulture: the folk etymological interpretation “Vin-Cent” is often interpreted as “a hundredfold wine” – a good omen for any cellar.

Although the area around Ópusztaszer is no longer considered Hungary’s primary wine-growing center, the celebration is a reminder of a glorious past. Archaeological excavations at the former monastery of Szer brought to light one of the largest wine cellars in the Great Plain. This proves that viticulture already played a central economic role here in the Middle Ages.
According to the Hungarian proverb “Ha megcsordul a Vince, tele lesz a pince” (When Vincent overflows, the cellar will be full), winegrowers are now hoping for a mild spring and a bountiful 2026.
Saint Vincent of Saragossa († around 304) is one of the most revered wine saints in Europe. Not only in Hungary, but also in France, southern Germany, and Austria, he is considered the patron saint of winegrowers. His feast day on January 22 traditionally marks the turning point in winter when preparations for the new season begin.
