The 10th Zsolnay Light Festival in Pécs began on Thursday with the opening of an exhibition paying tribute to Victor Vasarely, the world-famous founder of Op Art, by leading figures of Hungarian light art.
Márk Hummel, managing director of the organizer Zsolnay Heritage Management Nonprofit Ltd., said that the festival—welcoming more than 100,000 visitors—offers experiences at 35 venues featuring numerous Hungarian and international artists. He noted that this year’s theme honors the memory of Victor Vasarely, who once said that art should step out of exhibition spaces and become part of everyday life.
The director emphasized that this is exactly what happens at the event:
Pécs is transformed into a single, vast, pulsating, interactive communal space.
The exhibition titled “Perception Spaces – Hommage à Vasarely by Light”, shown at the m21 Gallery, invites visitors on a special journey where light, art, and perception meet—into a world where the eye often sees something different from what the brain interprets as reality.

Vasarely’s legacy is not presented on canvas this time, but through space, light, and movement. His artistic vision and the heritage of geometric abstraction are reinterpreted in a contemporary technological environment using light, repetition, algorithmic systems, and optical shifts.
At the center of the exhibition is perception: the works on display explore how much we can trust our eyes, how we perceive space, and how our own movement, attention, and presence influence what we see.
Visitors are not merely observers but active participants in the artworks—every step, change of viewing angle, or movement can create a new image and a new experience.
After the spectacular fire and LED show “LIGHTS ON!” by the Brazilian-Peruvian theater group Equilibra, performed on Thursday at Pécs’ main square, Széchenyi Square, the “Path of Light” was officially opened, covering the festival’s 35 venues.
Each day of the event, visitors can admire monumental light installations, interactive artworks, and immersive audiovisual spaces lasting into the early morning hours.
One of the festival’s most anticipated events is once again the Zsolnay Light Art Video Mapping Competition, which brings the façade of the Pécs Cathedral to life every evening. In this international competition, Italian, Chinese, and Bulgarian artists present works inspired by Vasarely, while the audience can vote for the winner of the anniversary year’s audience prize.

The city’s streets are animated by fire jugglers, acrobats, puppeteers, circus performers, and musicians. Families can enjoy creative light-themed crafts, community workshops, and interactive programs, while in the evenings DJs and concerts keep Pécs vibrant until the early morning hours.
Open-air events in the city center and outdoor stations of the “Path of Light” are free to attend, while the special indoor venues—the Zsolnay Quarter and the Kodály Center—can be accessed with the “Light Festival MAX” wristband.
