Even without being able to poll the front office representatives from all 30 MLB teams that weigh in on the award, White Sox general manager Chris Getz is getting some Executive of the Year votes; probably a lot of them.
That’s how things go when a team projected to finish in last place is still standing in the second week in October, after sending three players to the All-Star Game. But also, inarguably, Getz and his front office have brought in a lot of players who have overperformed expectations, and proven to be — or been developed into — far more valuable contributors than the public and industry believed when they were acquired.
“Chris is just a talented leader,” said special assistant David Keller, who keyed international pursuits of Munetaka Murakami and Anthony Kay. “He first and foremost did a tremendous job of identifying people who are great teammates.”
Murakami, Miguel Vargas, Chase Meidroth, Tristan Peters, Sean Newcomb, Randal Grichuk–even low-cost free-agent signing Erick Fedde was hearing his name chanted in unison by the home crowd during Game 4 of the American League Division Series.
If everyone knew when Getz was hired that by the end of his third full season, the most pressing question was whether he built a roster that could seriously compete for the AL pennant, the tenor of his introductory press conference would have been a little different.
“He’s done a terrific job and I really appreciate all the times you guys have written about you were wrong when I hired Chris,” White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf quipped after his team swept the Astros out of the wild-card series.
That said, the question of whether Getz can build a championship-level roster is now the one at hand. It’s a great problem to have, but it is now a pressing one.
“As you move higher, the jumps get harder to make,” assistant general manager Josh Barfield told the Sun-Times. “You have to be sharp. We also don’t have the bullets [to trade] that we had when we first got here.”
At present, the shortage of bullets reveals itself in the form of neither of the two pitchers the White Sox acquired at the trade deadline–Luis Castillo and Huascar Brazoban–cracking their ALDS roster, as they held fast onto top prospects like Caleb Bonemer and Billy Carlson in discussions with other teams.
And the perceptible gap between the Sox and the contenders they suddenly find themselves going toe-to-toe with, is pitching depth. Other teams have narrow playoff rotations, the South Siders have Sean Burke and a series of bullpen games, where ace reliever Grant Taylor is competing for the team lead in postseason innings pitched, and getting knocked around in Game 4 of a series where he’s already logged 5 ⅓ innings.
“I’ve been asked many times on eventually is this going to catch up with us,” said Getz before Game 3. “At least in the 2026 season, you look at the schedule, and well, it’s worked for us. Why can’t it further? We can find plenty of reasons why it may not. Eventually, you just run out. But these guys really take care of themselves.”
As Getz has intimated more than once, the Sox are playing with house money this season. Every step a seemingly unsustainable stretching of limited pitching resources gets them is another step farther than any reasonable person would have had them going. The question for a White Sox team that wants to win best-of-seven series now and in the future is not their unorthodox use of the playoff-worthy arms they have, but having more playoff-worthy arms.
Building a playoff team out of undervalued journeyman pitchers only holds its charm for so long. The reward of a stunning season where the Sox performed beyond their wildest dreams is a mandate to improve upon it, and the best teams in the league laying your shortcomings bare on a national stage.
