Hungary’s Governor-President Lajos Kossuth’s 1849 letter to revolutionary General Artúr Görgei sold for over four million forints (10 266 euros) at an Antikvárium.hu auction.
After a lengthy bidding war, the document—which started at a reserve price of half a million forints (1272 euros; 1 euro = 389 forints) —finally sold for 4.1 million forints at the Antikvárium.hu auction that closed Sunday evening.
Lajos Kossuth wrote the letter in his capacity as Governor-President of Hungary toward the end of the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence, in June 1849, to General Artúr Görgei, Commander-in-Chief of the Hungarian Army (he had dropped the “y” at the end of his name in 1848, following the family custom).

Hungarian political and military leaders still believed in success, but the situation was not looking good. By mid-June, Russian troops had reached Kassa (present-day Košice) and begun occupying the mining towns of modern day Slovakia. Consequently, on June 24 and 26, 1849, a cabinet meeting was convened in the capital to discuss the military strategy. The latter council, held on June 26, decided on the military strategy to be followed: the main army would be concentrated around Komárom, while the remaining Hungarian forces would be gathered along the Tisza.
On this day, Kossuth wrote the following letter to Görgei: “My Dear Friend! Gunpowder—gunpowder! One of our greatest concerns, all the more so because we have already lost the gunpowder mills in Eperjes (Prešov), Besztercebánya (Banská Bystrica), and Kassa. Our army is already in Miskolc. Jakovich is bringing the dispatches personally—he puts the Russian force at 64,000. As gunpowder is of great concern to me, I inquired about what is happening at the Buda gunpowder factory, and I learned that the second mill, though in poor condition, could be made operational with a few days’ work, but this has been halted [?], because there has been a change in the Inspectorate, with Rapaich replacing Waagner. I know nothing of the matter, but I take the liberty of warning you that any change at this time would cause a harmful delay, even if it were to bring about an improvement. I bring this matter to your attention and ask that you deign to give primary attention to the expansion of the gunpowder mills. Your faithful Kossuth 26/VI 49″
During these days, Kossuth wrote numerous letters to the general, mostly in a familiar tone, but a few days later—due to strategic disagreements—they became completely estranged from one another.
The individuals mentioned in the letter were József Jakovics, assistant governor of Sáros County; Major Gustav Waagner; and Lieutenant Colonel Dániel Rapaich of the Hungarian Army, who was appointed two days later as the national chief inspector of gunpowder production, the subject of the letter.
The letter, sealed with Kossuth’s red wax seal and bearing his handwritten address, did not appear in the published correspondence of the governor and the general. It first appeared at auction twenty years ago, in 2006.
Other items at the auction also sold for over half a million forints, including a 16th-century copper engraving of a view of Győr, József Rippl-Rónai’s special collection of drawings, and an 1855 letter from Ferenc Deák, which was connected to a fundraising campaign launched for reform era poet, Mihály Vörösmarty’s widow following his death.
