John Prine gets star studded tribute during five days of birthday celebrations

Margo price, nathaniel rateliff, steve earle, john c. Reilly and other artists sing together during the final ensemble chorus of “souvenirs: 80 years of john prine” at the chicago theatre on october 8, 2026.

If he was still alive, John Prine, the Maywood mailman turned songwriting hero, would be celebrating his 80th birthday Saturday — and Chicago’s music community didn’t want anyone to forget it.

Organizers, including Prine’s family, curated a five-day celebration of his life and work that kicked off Oct. 7. Thursday night was the centerpiece, with many luminaries gathering at the Chicago Theatre for a sold-out night of songs and stories that kept all his “Souvenirs” alive.

“His songs continue to be sung because they reflect the best qualities of people — empathy for the downtrodden, a common-sense approach to living and heartbreak, always followed by a good joke,” said the evening’s host, actor-musician John C. Reilly, kicking off nearly three hours of performances (most of them backed by Prine’s long-time band) that reinvigorated his songbook.

In addition to Reilly finding the real humor in “Jesus the Missing Years,” Americana icon Steve Earle gifted the crowd with a husky “Sam Stone” and roots rocker Nathaniel Rateliff delivered busker joy on “Pretty Good” after a rollicking duet of “In Spite of Ourselves” with country rebel Margo Price. Quirky folk star Valerie June gave a moving rendition of the Prine standard “Angel from Montgomery” and blues legend Shemekia Copeland brought the house down with her Prine collaboration “Great Rain.”

Artists from Prine’s Old Boy Records were represented as well, notably the soulful Arlo McKinley on “The Late John Garfield Blues.” Surprise guests Jeff Tweedy and Glenn Kotche of Wilco perfected a slow-build simmer of “Summers End” with Tweedy saying he picked that song because “my dad used to tell me to come on home, too.”

A majority of the performers were notably from Illinois, a decision by organizers to cement Prine’s identity as one of our own. In addition to Steppenwolf alum Reilly, along with Price and half of Wilco, that group also included indie folk-rock group Ratboys who took on “Quiet Man” and country crooner Andrew Sa on “Bad Boy.” The Evanston bluegrass group The Sullivan Sisters joined Chicago banjo player/singer Jonas Friddle on the night’s namesake, “Souvenirs.”

No reason is ever truly needed to celebrate Illinois’ prodigal music son, who found his tribe in the 1970s Old Town School of Folk Music scene — a mural in his honor was just finished on the exterior of the Lincoln Avenue institute, with artwork from Waco Brothers’ Jon Langford. Langford also appeared Thursday night to offer a pensive “How Lucky Can One Man Get?” and a mural tip for onlookers: “Sneak down the next street [to Oakley] and overlook the Daily Bar to fully see it.”

But honoring Prine’s 80th has come with a full salute to honor his legacy of good music and even better goodwill. His everyman music extended into his civic work as Prine was a benefactor for many causes related to health care, veteran services, addiction recovery, refugee and immigrant support, and services for the houseless. After Prine died, his family started the Hello in There Foundation to continue that work.

“We want to keep John’s music alive and keep gathering with people, growing the community and donating in his name to people who need it most,” said executive director Celine Thackston, appearing alongside Prine’s wife, Fiona, on stage. Thackston noted the group has donated $1.4 million over the past six years, with proceeds from this week’s events going back to the organization as well.

Those festivities have included screenings of the concert documentary, “How Lucky Can One Man Get” at the Gene Siskel Film Center, discussion panels with the Prine family and friends at Gman Tavern and the Chicago History Museum, and even a look-a-like contest at Hattie B’s in Wrigleyville.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (left) shares the stage with the late John Prine’s wife, Fiona Whelan Prine, and Celine Thackston, executive director of the Hello in There Foundation. The mayor declared Oct. 10, 2026 “John Prine Day.”

“I can’t think of a better place to celebrate than here in our great city because John was Chicago,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. Johnson made a special guest appearance at the Chicago Theater to officially proclaim Oct. 10, 2026 John Prine Day, connecting the ethos of Prine with his policies.

“We are carrying out the legacy of our dear brother and that’s why I was proud to sign multiple executive orders standing up to the Trump administration and making sure that Chicago will always be a welcoming city, we will never bow down, we will never cower, we will never submit … democracy will live on,” the mayor declared to rousing applause.

Later, Reilly extended that message and encouraged attendees to vote in the upcoming mid-terms while reminding the crowd that Thursday was also the birthday of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson “who also dedicated himself to lifting people up.” Throughout the night, the actor-musician also read anecdotes from Prine’s life (written by Chicago Sun-Times/WBEZ contributor Mark Guarino) between songs, elevated by intimate reflections from the artists.

The evening’s host John C. Reilly encouraged the audience to keep Prine’s spirit alive. “If you see someone down on their luck, give them a smile to lift them up,” he said. “Every bit of kindness helps.”

The evening’s best was country-soul star Amos Lee recalling the time he was caught “stealing” Prine’s pizza backstage at a show long ago. Prine was known to invite all performers at his concerts back for a night-ending serenade of “Paradise” and could smell it on his breath, he said.

Thursday night’s show ended the same way: All 22 performers returned to the stage for a sweet “Paradise” send-off. Reilly appropriately compared the tribute to a New Orleans Second Line and encouraged everyone to keep Prine’s spirit alive. “If you see someone down on their luck, give them a smile to lift them up,” he said. “Every bit of kindness helps.”
