A portion of Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway will be closed Wednesday morning as crews remove a massive blue sculpture from the grounds of the Kennedy Center.
The National Park Service said the northbound lanes of the parkway will be closed from 6 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m. The timing could change depending on the removal operation.
The closure was requested by the Kennedy Center so a crane can occupy the roadway while crews remove “Blue,” a towering painted-aluminum sculpture by artist Joel Shapiro.
The 24-foot sculpture was installed outside the REACH when the Kennedy Center expansion opened in 2019. Shapiro created the piece specifically for the site and donated it to the Kennedy Center.
NPS said the closure is necessary because of the sculpture’s location and to protect both the removal crew and the public. It was already wrapped up for removal before the closure, WTOP’s Neal Augenstein reported.
Blockades are expected at the E Street on-ramp and near the intersections of the parkway with Parkway Drive NW and F Street NW.
The Kennedy Center has confirmed the sculpture is being removed but has not publicly explained why the piece is being taken down. It said a foundation dedicated to Shapiro, who died in 2025, will determine where the sculpture goes next.
WTOP has reached out to the National Park Service for additional information.
