Programs in English at Komaba (PEAK) is a 4-year undergraduate program at the University of Tokyo conducted in English, where students of diverse backgrounds form a unique academic and cultural community. The Todai Shimbun conducted a voluntary survey of current PEAK students in May 2026 to examine their extracurricular participation, part-time employment, and post-graduation plans. Responses from 49 students were included in the analysis after excluding one respondent who had transferred out of PEAK. The sample included nine students from the Class of 2026, 11 from 2027, 17 from 2028, and 12 from 2029. When contacted by the Todai Shimbun regarding the total number of current PEAK students, UTokyo’s Strategic Communications Group declined to answer. However, estimates often range from 120-140 students.
Due to the small size of the PEAK student body, Todai Shimbun members who are also current PEAK students were included among the survey respondents. They had no prior knowledge of the survey questions and completed the survey under the same conditions as all other participants. (Written by Hana Uemura, Aiden Hsu, and Kamil Zeribi)
Extracurricular participation in lower-commitment circles (サークル) and higher-commitment clubs (部活) is a key component of university lifestyles for both international and Japanese students. 75.5% of the respondents belong to a club or circle. These results are likely influenced by sampling bias, as respondents participating in extracurricular activities may have been more likely to participate in the survey, resulting in participation rates to be overrepresented compared to the broader PEAK student body.
The rate of club participation also decreases across cohorts, from 100.0% in the class of 2029 and 88.2% in the class of 2028, to 54.5% in the class of 2027 and 44.4% in the class of 2026. One possible explanation is that first-year students may join extracurricular activities to build social connections after arriving in Japan. Participation may decline in later years as students devote more time to job-hunting or graduate school preparation.

When asked, some surveyed PEAK students discussed how they would like PEAK to improve, mentions of low information availability and language barriers were common, with one student stating “you have to scour the internet for quite some time to get information on activities and services.” Vash, a student from the Philippines, stated “most events are held in Japanese with little to no English support further isolating the international students”. In contrast, some students spoke positively, with one praising that the “variety of circles here, is all something I think is unique to PEAK and Todai”.
PEAK students were also asked whether they were currently employed at a part-time job. For many non-Japanese PEAK students, acquiring “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted” is required to work in Japan on a student visa. The part-time work license allows students to work a maximum of 28 hours a week and eight hours a day during university-recognized long holidays.
The majority of respondents (69.3%) currently work a part-time job. The class of 2028 stood out and had higher rates of working a part-time job, with 81.25% responding yes. Next was the class of 2026, with 66.6% students responding yes.

The Todai Shimbun also asked current PEAK students whether they plan to stay in Japan post-graduation. 49.0% of students responded that they plan to stay in Japan, while an additional 4.1% said they plan to stay only temporarily. Meanwhile, 20.4% of students said they plan to leave Japan after graduation, while 26.5% remain undecided about their post-graduation plans.

Overall, the survey found that many PEAK students participate in extracurricular activities and part-time work alongside their studies. Post-graduation plans varied among respondents, with some planning to remain in Japan, others planning to leave, and others still undecided.
