On 18 September, the University of Tokyo held the 2026 Autumn Diploma Presentation and Commencement Ceremony, to formally confer diplomas on graduating undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and professional students — both international and Japanese — who completed their studies between April and September 2026. The ceremony took place in Yasuda Auditorium and was held in English, with a livestream available online.
The ceremony was opened by the University of Tokyo Orchestra, which performed Movements I, III, and IV from Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik in G major, K. 525.
Following the presentation of diplomas, President Teruo Fujii’s speech highlighted the power of sight and its connection to scholarship. He referenced the role of sight in the Cambrian explosion, noting that the evolution of eyes allowed early organisms to detect movement and judge distance, driving an expansion of life. He also highlighted scientific discoveries made possible by looking beyond what is immediately visible, such as the detection of neutrinos. Fujii said this spirit of looking beyond the visible is also central to scholarship, arguing that searching for challenges and things that cannot yet be seen but are hinted at, drives scholarship forward.
At the same time, Fujii emphasized that people perceive the world differently, making it dangerous to jump to conclusions based solely on what we see, particularly in an age of AI-generated images. He stressed the importance of cooperation and dialogue, saying that we should cooperate with those around us without simply falling in line. Under this spirit of tolerance, Fujii concluded by emphasizing the importance of engaging with perspectives different from our own.
The speeches by representatives of graduating students were then delivered by Taniai Hiroki of the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology and Ashta Yogin Maharaj of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The ceremony closed with a performance of “Ōzora-to” by the University of Tokyo male choir, Chor Akademie, and female choir, Coro Letizia, followed by those in attendance singing “Tada-hitotsu” together.
