On 28 September, Prof Yuko Fujigaki (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, former Executive Vice President) was selected by the University President Screening & Inspection Committee as the next President of the University of Tokyo. Following her appointment by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, she is expected to become UTokyo’s 32nd President, serving from April 2027 to March 2033.
This is the first time in UTokyo’s history that a woman has been selected as president. It also appears to be the first time since the current presidential selection system was established that someone who did not receive the most votes in the opinion vote has been selected as president.
The opinion vote was held on the morning of 28 September, with Prof Yuko Fujigaki receiving 553 votes in the second round, placing second behind Executive Director and Vice President Takao Someya.

Prof Yuko Fujigaki (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, former Executive Vice President)
She graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at UTokyo in 1985 and completed her doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1990, earning a Doctor of Philosophy. She worked at the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy under the Japan Science and Technology Agency before becoming a professor at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 2010. She served as an Executive Vice President of UTokyo for five years from 2021.
