On 16 May, the 99th May Festival (Gogatsu-sai) was suspended shortly before 14:00 due to a bomb threat and ultimately cancelled. On 17 May, the festival will proceed as planned. In addition to conducting baggage checks upon entry for all visitors, including university personnel, nighttime security will also be strengthened to ensure safety.
The 99th May Festival Standing Committee notified all participating organisations that safety has been ensured on campus and that the festival will be held on 17 May. In response to an inquiry by the Todai Shimbun, the committee confirmed that the festival will proceed as planned from 9:00 until 18:00.
On 16 May at 13:53, the committee communicated that all events were being suspended for “safety reasons”. On the same day at roughly 14:30, committee members called for the cancellation of events and for visitors to leave the Hongo Area Campus. At 16:17, the committee announced on its official X account that it, as well as a participating organisations, had received emails with threats to bomb the Hongo and Yayoi campuses during the 99th May Festival. The committee, while expressing its regret, stated that it had consulted with the university and the police and ultimately decided to cancel all events for the day.
